Thankfully, the repair guides on iFixit, along with these tools, allowed me to open the controller, dry it out, and restore it to full functionality. I’ve used this kit multiple times for DIY repairs, and it’s an excellent starting point for fixing laptops and phones. The screwdriver cap rotates separately from the shaft, which is crucial for precise electronics work. The included bits have a decent level of magnetism and are surprisingly good quality for the price. The suction cup and four blue tools, which are definitely not guitar picks, are essential for opening devices that require that method. The flat side of the black spudger is perfect for prying open cases. While the sharp side may bend or dull a little, it remains useful and won’t puncture delicate components, which I consider a priority. I haven’t found the blue pry tool necessary over the others, but it feels solid and well-constructed.
I do believe the kit would benefit from a different pair of tweezers. Although the length and angled tips are great, the extremely pointed tips can easily cause damage if you’re not careful, and they are prone to bending due to their thinness. I prefer using my rounded-tip tweezers to avoid accidentally puncturing anything. Including a pair of blunt-tip tweezers would be a better choice for a starter kit.
The selection of bits is quite good overall. However, I think a T3 bit would be more practical than the triwing bit, as I often needed a T3 while working on a 2020 MacBook. I’ve rarely had to use the triwing, though results may vary. The P2 pentalobe bit can twist if not handled carefully since it’s so small, but the other bits have performed well.
In summary, this is a fantastic starter kit for phone and laptop repairs. It would cover a broader range of applications with the addition of a T3 torx bit and rounder tweezers, but it’s definitely worth purchasing. One more advantage is the magnetic lid of the case, which has ample clearance; I managed to tape my round-nose tweezers and a Wiha pentalobe driver to the inside without any issues closing the lid.

Some of the tools are made of plastic, but they still feel high-quality and have been quite helpful for various small repairs and maintenance on my electronics that I had been delaying.
The magnetized screwdriver, which is mostly plastic, is quite nice. It features a rubber grip and allows you to store three bits in the free-spinning end cap. Although it’s the least expensive bit driver available from iFixit, it gets the job done well. I’m not sure how often I’ll need most of the metal bits, but it’s nice to have them on hand just in case, and they didn’t significantly increase the price.
The spudger (made of carbon fiber) and the opening tool (plastic, designed to break before your device does) were perfect for extracting a broken drive from one of my laptops that had been stuck down with some sticky putty from a previous repair. I was able to use the opening tool to lift it enough to pry at the putty with the spudger until the drive came loose.
The opening picks (plastic) are great too; there are six of them, and they made removing the shell from both my laptop and my 3DS a breeze.
I haven’t used the tweezers (metal), suction cup (plastic), or jimmy (plastic with a metal blade) yet, but I can tell they’ll be handy for future projects, and they seem to be of decent quality.
Everything fits snugly in a solid case (plastic with a foam insert). The case consists of two pieces held together by magnets, which hold securely. To access the tools, you simply push down on the bottom, and they flip up easily.
The only additional tool I might find useful that isn’t included is a way to heat and soften adhesives, but I can easily improvise a heating pad. If I end up needing that often, I’d prefer to invest in a heat gun instead.
The price is quite reasonable! Individually, these tools would cost $37 from iFixit, not including the screwdriver bits. Plus, it came with some cool stickers!
If you have use for these tools, I highly recommend picking this kit up. If you won’t use them all, iFixit offers various options that might better suit your needs, or you can always buy a few specific tools if that’s all you require.
